Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation (NLC) Announces Loss Prevention Initiative

  • ST. JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR,
    14 June 2022

NLC has recently experienced a significant rise in theft at Liquor Stores, with a potential loss of $500,000 in retail sales value this year should the trend continue at its current pace – almost 20 times the rate of theft experienced pre-pandemic. With the safety of staff and customers top of mind, NLC has implemented further efforts to combat this growing issue.

Given the increase in the volume and the organized nature of the theft, we have engaged internal teams, as well as partners in security and law enforcement to help curb this trend. Also, effective immediately, in addition to the current criminal code, the NLC will exercise the full scope of its authority under the Liquor Control Act. Beverage alcohol obtained illegally (including theft) is considered contraband product. As such, perpetrators found guilty of possession of contraband may face penalties including fines, seizure of property and jail time.

The health and safety of our staff and customers is our top priority. Anyone witnessing acts of theft are strongly discouraged from intervening, but are asked to contact NLC’s Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement division directly at (709) 724-8616, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, your nearest Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment or Crime Stoppers.
