Today, the Provincial Government announced that the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation (NLC) will be selling off its inventory of American product and donating the net profit to the Community Food Sharing Association. An immediate donation of $500,000 will be provided today, with the total donation amount estimated to be up to $1 million, pending the sale of the product.
The Provincial Government has been working on this initiative with the NLC for several weeks and is proud to announce the news of this substantial donation today at a critical time for many families, the lead up to the holiday season.
The Community Food Sharing Association will ensure that food banks throughout Newfoundland and Labrador benefit from this move. The donation comes at a critical point as the association distributes food through 60 food banks province-wide and serves more than 15,400 people, including 4,700 children under the age of 18 and 1,300 seniors, on a monthly basis. This represents a 44.1 per cent increase since 2019.
NLC is currently arranging to return the existing American product to corporate Liquor Store shelves beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, December 10. As restocking timelines and product availability will vary by location, customers are encouraged to visit nlliquor.com for up-to-date stock information prior to visiting their nearest store. Product will also be made available to Liquor Express locations for purchase.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is firmly committed to promoting and supporting locally produced and Canadian-made goods, recognizing the vital role they play in strengthening our communities and economy.
“I am really pleased to announce today our decision to sell-off the remaining inventory of American liquor, with the net revenue of sales going to the Community Food Sharing Association. This move just makes sense – while trade challenges persist with the United States, why not turn the situation into something positive for the people of our own province, especially during the holiday season.”
Honourable Craig Pardy
Minister of Finance
“NLC firmly supports the Provincial Government in moving forward with the sale of remaining U.S. inventory, and we are honoured to help give back to our communities at a time of great need by supporting the Community Food Sharing Association. We appreciate our customers’ patience as our teams work hard to place U.S. products back on shelves.”
Bruce Keating
President and CEO, NLC
“On behalf of Community Food Sharing, we are deeply grateful for this extraordinary holiday donation. With over 60-member food banks across Newfoundland and Labrador, this support will make a direct and immediate difference for families in every corner of our province. At a time when many are struggling to keep food on the table, this generosity helps ensure that thousands of our neighbours can enjoy a warm, nourishing meal this season and beyond. The impact is truly local, truly meaningful, and felt by communities throughout NL.”
