Janis C. Byrne

Director

Janis Byrne is a lawyer and independent director, having recently retired as Executive Vice President - Legal with Pennecon Limited. Prior to joining Pennecon in 1999, Ms. Byrne worked in private practice with the law firm Poole Althouse in Corner Brook.

Ms. Byrne has served on numerous boards, with over 25 years of experience in the governance of non-profit and for-profit boards. She currently sits as director and chair of the people and culture committee, Atlantic Lottery Corporation, and director of the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation. She is a recent past Chair of the St. John’s Board of Trade, and a past President of the Canadian Bar Association (NL).

A graduate of Memorial University, Ms. Byrne also holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Windsor and a Bachelor of Civil Law from the University of Ottawa. She received the Institute of Corporate Directors designation in 2017, and was appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 2020. Janis also holds an Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Certification from Competent Boards.

Ms. Byrne was appointed to NLC’s Board of Directors on September 9, 2021 and serves on NLC’s Governance and Human Resources Committee and is Chair of NLC’s Regulatory Committee.
